New drama Does Buddha Eat Haggis opened this week at the Etcetera Theatre and runs until Sunday 7 August at 12.30pm, as part of Camden Fringe.
Described as Ab Fab meets Eat Pray Love, Does Buddha Eat Haggis focuses on a middle-aged, single and slightly insane mother of one’s journey of self discovery to a Buddhist retreat in Scotland, complete with naked yoga.
She expects to find herself almost immediately, but after being subjected to strict guidelines, hours of painting, trance dancing and cat chanting, Helena escapes and returns home, walking in on her daughter and girlfriend, something she definitely wasn’t expecting!
“I met my housemate’s mother and came face to face with a shocking and outrageous woman, and I just had to write a show about her,” says Rebecca Pearson, of Pearson Productions, “after listening to her chanting on about wanting to attend a retreat, this show then came about!”
She added: “There is a dark undertone towards the end. It is funny but there is a twist. It is basically it is a farce.”
